This lush area lies just far enough into northeast side of the island that it is transformed into a land of tropical fantasy. It is also an area rich with history. Many small communities grew out of the sugar plantation era. Small communities such as Honokaa have become increasingly popular as bedroom communities for westside resort workers and serve as suburbs for Hilo. The small towns are a true cultural melting pot. The state’s first native Hawaiian governor, John D. Waihee III is from this locale.

Hamakua traverses 50 miles of rugged and beautiful coastline. Historic plantation estates populate the area and a prominent feature is open space and historic dairy and farmlands. Hamakua is steeped in ranching tradition.

Farmers markets, rodeos and country and western themes are common throughout the area known for locally raised beef and produce enjoyed in a surprising number of venues and events.

Miles upon miles of wind swept green mountainsides with views of the ocean hundreds of feet below create some of the most idyllic living conditions anywhere on earth. Plentiful rainfall keeps this part of the island greener and cooler as if in a perpetual spring season. Streams and waterfalls are abundant. You may even find a property with your own private waterfall.

Families often make this area home because it is so well oriented toward a secluded and wholesome lifestyle – and a bit slower paced than the tourist attractions of the Kona Coast.

Homes can be purchased at very reasonable terms ranging anywhere from a few hundred thousand to just over $1 million in price. Lot sizes tend to be very generous in the beautiful tropical countryside.
