Five Best Places to Propose on the Big Island

marry me in sand five best places to propose on the big island

There are few better places to propose than on the Big Island. Whether you’re on the beach, on a scenic hike, or even—if you’re really brave—under water, you’re sure to find the perfect spot to pop the question. Here are a few of the best places to propose on the Big Island:

On a romantic hike

If you and your partner are the outdoorsy type, what better way to propose than after a hike through a beautiful Hawaiian valley? The scenic views over lush tropical forests are sure to provide the perfect romantic setting you’re looking for. If you’re not afraid of a little elevation gain, Waipio Valley is a truly beautiful spot. You can also go for a horseback ride if that’s more your style. If you’re looking for a shorter jaunt rather than a full day hike, Pololu Valley lookout is another place we recommend.

During a walk on the beach

A walk along the beach provides the perfect intro to a proposal. There’s a reason you’ve seen it done so many times in the movies. But you want to make sure you find someplace that allows a little privacy for you and your future bride (or groom). Mau’umae Beach in Waimea has gorgeous views and is is much quieter than others on the island, allowing you plenty of unmarred space for engagement photos! Kukio Beach is another good option you might consider.

By a waterfall

If you’re looking for the ultimate backdrop, you can’t do better than Akaka falls. A short hike through the state park takes you through a Hawaiian jungle full of wild orchids, bamboo, and tropical ferns until the path opens up to a gorgeous 442 foot waterfall. The mist creates a permanent rainbow making the scene almost magical.

Watching the sunset on the bay

Sitting on the shore waiting for the green flash is a must-do on any Hawaiian vacation. The last rays of light glitter over the ocean and create a gorgeous view and serene experience that is the perfect opportunity to pop the question. Kailua-Kona Bay offers unobstructed views of the ocean and is close enough to town that you can take your sweetie for a celebratory cocktail afterward. Sitting on the lava-rock wall, you can feel the ocean spray on your feet and also see picturesque, historic downtown Kona.

On the water

If you really want to impress your partner, why not take them on a cocktail cruise? From Kailua-Kona Pier you can catch the Captain Cook Sunset Dinner cruise and enjoy a 3.5 hour tour of the coast. The trip will take you past Kealakekua Bay and the famous Captain Cook monument just as the sun dips below the horizon. If it’s whale season, you may even spot a few breaching nearby. The delicious Hawaiian cuisine and epic views will make sure it an evening you and your partner will never forget.
