The Big Island’s northernmost tip – North Kohala – is a lush, pastoral place. Here you’ll find rolling hills and meadows studded with grazing cattle and blanketed in velvety green. Cooling mists of rain are common here.
While North Kohala’s neighbor, South Kohala (a.k.a The Kohala Coast), boasts alluring luxury resorts and world-class golf, North Kohala bears the hallmarks of a rich agricultural past. Its paniolo (that’s Hawaiian cowboys), cattle, and rodeo tradition present a true slice of Old Hawaii.
North Kohala’s ranching history stretches back generations, when King Kamehameha I was gifted five longhorn cattle that quickly multiplied. Cattle wrangling became an important skill, honed by the Mexican vaqueros (horsemen) who came to the Island to teach riding and roping.
Today, no North Kohala ranch is more recognizable than Parker Ranch – the Island’s first, which began with two acres and now occupies an astounding 225,000 acres of beautiful Hawaiian countryside.
A visit to Parker Ranch, where you can tour two of its historic homes and learn about its 160-year history, is one of the most popular things to do in North Kohala.
Wondering what to do for the 4th of July on the Big Island?
Here’s one suggestion. Take a scenic drive into the fields of Waimea near North Kohala and visit Parker Ranch for its annual Parker Ranch July 4th Rodeo and Horse Races.
This family-friendly event (admission is free for kids) features competitions like horse racing and Po‘o Wai U, a cattle wrangling method unique to Hawaii, developed generations ago by the Island’s paniolo.
The Rodeo begins at 9am on July 4th and continues through 12 noon. Admission is $10 for adults and free for kids under age 12.
It’s for sure one of the most authentic and fun things to do in North Kohala on the 4th of July!
