HOW TO RETIRE ON THE BIG ISLAND IN FIVE EASY STEPS

You’ve worked hard, spent years saving for retirement, and you’re ready to relax in paradise. Hawaii attracts many people in your shoes who have earned the right to sit on the beach every evening with their toes in the sand and their eyes on the horizon, waiting for the green flash. If you’re considering retiring in Hawaii, there are a few simple steps you can take to ensure a smooth transition and make sure you’re fully prepared for the new adventure that awaits. Check out or quick list of tips that will help you retire on the Big Island and make your dream a reality.

1) Tie up loose ends

Before you come to the Big Islands, it’s important that you make a list of anything you need to take care of before moving. While Hawaii is well connected to the mainland with flights in and out almost every day, travel time is long and can be costly depending on the time of year. If there is anything you need to do in person on the mainland, get it out of the way before you move so you don’t need to worry about it. You may want to have a final consultation with your regular physician, hire someone to help you sell or rent your home, or update important documents with your local government offices. Make a list of those items and check them off before you arrive.

2) Do your research

You’ll have plenty of time to set up your network and discover your new community on the Big Island after you get here, but it couldn’t hurt to do some research and have some basic items set up before your arrival. If you know roughly where you’ll be located, look up local providers in the area and read some reviews. Have a short-term doctor, veterinarian, realtor, and car rental dealership that you can contact soon after your arrival. Doing so will ensure a smooth transition for you and your family (including any furry friends you’re bringing along).

3) Budget your finances

You’ve probably heard that there are some goods which cost quite a bit more on the Big Island. Many products are shipped from the mainland so things like brand-name bottled water, toothpaste, and cereal can carry a higher price tag. While it’s certainly easy to find cheaper alternatives (for example you can grocery shop at the local farmer’s markets) it’s a good idea to map out a budget so you can make sure you’re staying on target. Keep in mind that your heating bill will be next to nothing, but you’ll need to set aside a few thousand for moving costs.

4) Find your community

It’s a good idea to spend a little time on the Big Island before you settle on your final community and buy a home.
