THE BEST FARMER’S MARKETS ON THE BIG ISLAND

With its year-round sunshine, ample rain, and long growing season, Hawaii is the perfect location for tasty fruits and vegetables to flourish (there is a reason people like Oprah build farms here). So a trip to Hawaii isn’t complete without without a visit to one of the many local farmers markets where Hawaiian growers convene and bring their perfectly ripe produce to the masses. If you live on Hawaii, you probably already know that purchasing your groceries here is as cheap if not less expensive than at the local stores. But if you’re new to the island or just visiting and looking for an authentic Hawaiian experience, we recommend a trip to one of the best farmer’s markets on the Big Island.

Kona Sunset Farmer’s Market

The aptly named Kona Sunset Farmers Market is hosted in the Kmart Parking Lot in downtown Kona every Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until Sunset. This is a community-based farmers market and, of course, all the food on sale is grown right here on the island. You’ll also find an array of local artisanal products including organic salves and body products, art, and jewelry. South Kona Green Market

The South Kona Green Market is located in Captain Cook takes place every Sunday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Operating under the mantra “From the land—by our hand,” this market has a warm community of local vendors whose Aloha spirit make this market a must-visit. It’s a perfect place for an early Sunday stroll, and patrons can buy fresh ground, fresh brewed coffee onsite. For more information and parking instruction, visit their Facebook page.

Hawi Farmer’s Market

Every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., you’ll find some of the best local artisans selling their arts and crafts at the Hawi Farmer’s Market on the corner of Akoni Pule highway. There are many fruit and veggie stands for grocery shopping, and it’s also a great spot to find handcrafted treasures to bring home to family and friends (or keep for yourself). Paradise Meadows Farm Stand

The Paradise Meadows Farm Stand isn’t a farmers market per say, but you can’t buy fresher produce and goods than what you’ll find here. This 75-acre orchard and bee farm produces award winning Ka’u Coffee, 100% Hawaiian Macadamia Nuts, and 100% Hawaiian honey that is the perfect take-home treat. Visitors are also invited to tour the farm, meet their six pet parrots, and check out the sustainable aquaponics greenhouse.
