About Kapa'au

Kapa’au is located in the North Kohala district at the north end of the island near Hawi. This small unincorporated town is home to less than 2000 residents near Keokea Beach Park. Kapa’au is a historical home known for a large statue of the King Kamehameha the Great near his birthplace. The statute was originally built in 1878 in Paris, put on a ship to Hawaii but before it reached its destination the vessel sank near the Falkland Islands. So Hawaiian legislature ordered a new one but the captain of the wrecked ship leader found the statue they thought was lost standing in Port Stanley. He purchased it and shipped it to Hawaii where it was erected in this small town. However, the second statue was already underway and now stands in front of the Ali’iolani Hale building in Honolulu. On June 11 every year the statue is draped with flower leis to celebrate Hawaii’s greatest king.
